When can you see whales Western Australia’s South West?
Typically, migrating Humpback and Southern Right whales can be spotted as they leave the cold, food-rich Antarctic waters and arrive in Augusta from late May and stay until late August. The Southern Rights often bring their calves close to shore, while the Humpbacks continue their journey north to warmer breeding grounds. Augusta is perfectly placed to view these spectacular wild animals as they make their way past, often stopping off for a rest and play.
From September each year, the whales are in Geographe Bay. After breeding in the warmer waters up north, there will be 40,000 Humpbacks and their calves heading south to the Antarctic waters. The whales use Geographe Bay as their last resting area before the long swim home.

Whale Song, our custom-built, 17-meter aluminium catamaran, is the only vessel in Western Australia that has been designed specifically for whale watching. Passenger numbers are limited to ensure everyone has an unobstructed view of the whales, with plenty of space on the stern or bow to get up close and personal, or a bird’s eye view from the wheelhouse.
