Frequently Asked Questions

Whale watching is an exhilarating activity where you can observe whales in their natural habitat. It offers a unique opportunity to see these magnificent marine mammals up close as they swim, feed, and sometimes even breach the water. Whale watching tours are guided by experienced professionals who provide insights into whale behaviour, biology, and the importance of marine conservation.

In Augusta, Western Australia, whale watching primarily focuses on observing Southern Right and Humpback whales as they migrate through the pristine waters of Flinders Bay. The tours not only allow for the observation of whales but also often include sightings of other marine life such as dolphins and seabirds, making it a comprehensive and educational wildlife experience.

The whale watching season in Western Australia typically runs from May to November, coinciding with the migration of Southern Right and Humpback whales along the West Australian coastline.

The season starts off the coast of Augusta and moves to Dunsborough and Busselton towards the latter half of the year.

Whale watching in Western Australia offers the chance to observe two main types of whales: Southern Right whales and Humpback whales.

Southern Right whales are large baleen whales, easily recognisable by their broad backs without a dorsal fin and the distinctive callosities on their heads. These whales often bring their calves close to shore, providing frequent and intimate sightings near the coastline. Known for their curious and interactive nature, Southern Right whales sometimes approach boats, offering spectacular viewing opportunities. They migrate from the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Antarctic to the warmer waters off the coast of Australia for breeding and calving.

Humpback whales, on the other hand, are easily identified by their distinctive body shape, long pectoral fins, and knobbly head. Famous for their acrobatic breaches and complex songs, Humpbacks are known for their active surface behaviours, including breaching, tail slapping, and spy-hopping. Their playful and energetic displays are a highlight of whale watching tours. Humpback whales migrate from the Antarctic feeding grounds to warmer tropical waters, where they mate and give birth. During their migration, they pass through the waters of Augusta, offering excellent viewing opportunities.

While there are many wonderful locations for whale watching, we might be a bit biased when we say that Augusta and Busselton in Western Australia, stands out as our ultimate destinations for this incredible experience.

Nestled at the southwestern tip of Australia, Augusta offers unparalleled opportunities to witness the majestic Southern Right and Humpback whales as they migrate along the West Australian coastline. From May to late August, the pristine waters of Augusta’s Flinders Bay become a bustling playground for these magnificent marine mammals, ensuring an unparalleled spectacle of nature’s grandeur.

Compared to other locations, Augusta boasts a staggering concentration of whales, providing visitors with an immersive and unforgettable encounter with these gentle giants. While we may be biased in our opinion, the abundance of sightings and breath-taking moments experienced by our guests supports our claim.

When preparing for a whale watching tour, it’s best to dress appropriately and bring a few key items to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Here are some recommendations:

Clothing:

  • Layered Clothing: The weather on the water can be unpredictable, so dressing in layers is advisable.
  • Windbreaker or Waterproof Jacket: Even on sunny days, the ocean breeze can be chilly, and there’s always the possibility of sea spray. A windbreaker or waterproof jacket will help protect you from the wind and keep you dry.
  • Comfortable Pants: Wear comfortable pants that provide warmth and allow for ease of movement. Jeans or quick-drying hiking pants are good options.
  • Footwear: Choose sturdy, non-slip shoes that can handle wet conditions. Sneakers or waterproof boots are ideal. Avoid open-toed shoes or sandals as they offer little protection from the elements.

Accessories:

  • Hat and Sunglasses: Protect yourself from the sun’s glare off the water by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and polarized sunglasses. This will also make it easier to spot whales without being impacted by the sun.
  • Sunscreen: Even on cloudy days, UV rays can be strong on the open water. Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin to prevent sunburn.
  • Binoculars: While the boat will get you close to the whales, binoculars can enhance your viewing experience by allowing you to see details from a distance.
  • Camera: Bring a camera with a zoom lens to capture those unforgettable moments. Ensure it’s secured with a strap to prevent accidental drops into the water.

Additional Items:

  • Water and Snacks: Although the tour is only about two hours long, it’s a good idea to bring a bottle of water and some snacks to keep you hydrated and energised.
  • Anti-Nausea Medication: If you are prone to seasickness, consider taking anti-nausea medication before the trip. All Sea Charters also offers anti-nausea bracelets onboard for added comfort.
  • Small Backpack: Carry a small backpack to store your extra layers, sunscreen, snacks, and any other personal items.

By dressing in layers, protecting yourself from the elements, and bringing a few essential items, you can ensure a comfortable and enjoyable whale watching experience. Remember to be prepared for changing weather conditions and to prioritise comfort and protection.

  • Spotting Techniques: Experienced crew members and guides scan the horizon with binoculars to search for signs of whale activity such as spouts, breaching, or fluke dives.
  • Marine Wildlife Observations: Whales are often found near other marine wildlife, such as seabirds or dolphins. Crew members may look for these indicators to narrow down potential whale sightings.
  • Hydrophone Technology: Some boats use hydrophones, which are underwater microphones, to listen for the sounds of whale vocalisations. This method can help locate whales that are not visible at the surface.
